The Storyteller’s Origin
Hello, and welcome to The Indigo Storyteller. My name is Jane Marie. I chose the color indigo because it is the color of the Throat Chakra in Eastern cultures. It is believed that the Throat Chakra represents speaking the truth. The word “Storyteller” is a name the Native Americans gave to the one who traveled from tribe to tribe to pass down the stories or “sacred truths” inherent to that tribe, so that the stories would not be lost and continue to be handed down from generation to generation. And thus was born “The Indigo Storyteller.” My passion is to create in clay the stories that have touched my life.
Starting with a lump of clay and detailed photographs of American Indian heritage and their artwork, sculpting a Storyteller begins. It takes many, many hours of patient concentration to form clothes, hair, hands, fingers, and to finish with fine beaded leather details — including leather stitching, fringes, and the tiniest bead designs and feathers. The animal Storytellers are created in the same way.
A native Coloradoan, I developed my artistic skills through independent practice. Each piece is hand-built, inspired by mountain vistas, wildlife and ancestral legacies.
